Each year, L’Oréal organizes a mentoring program for students from non-Western backgrounds in collaboration with ECHO. The purpose here is twofold: on the one hand, the student has someone to spar with about the next steps in their career; on the other hand, the mentor learns more about the challenges the mentee experiences and his/her cultural background. To make this three-month process even more concrete, we ask both mentee and mentor to keep track of their findings. At the end of the course, they present in pairs what they have learned and what knowledge they can use in the future. These pitches are always a great reflection on the entire process, and it is always inspiring to hear how much mentor and mentee have learned about each other’s experiences in three months. Prior to the track, all mentors have a D&I training where they get more background on diversity and inclusion and how to get the most out of the track. In doing so, listening with an active and open attitude is essential. During the training, mentors can practice this and get feedback on how to get even more out of it.
